CHILDREN'S EYE PROBLEMS IN HONG KONG- THE MOST SERIOUS IN THE WORLD

Recent research on eyesight done at three primary schools in Hong Kong by the Research Centre of Clinical Experiment & Popular Diseases at the Chinese University of Hong Kong has found that among 1,186 pupils from Primary 1 to 5, 40.8% are short sighted, 3.4% have crossed eyes, and 2.5% have weak eyesight. The percentages for both short eyesight and weak eyesight are the highest in the world. But what is most surprising is that most of the students and their parents do not realize that there are any visual problems until they take the eye examination.
If the parents had not detected their children's problems until after their visual systems had matured, the chances of cure would have been very small. But if the problems are found before 12 years of age, many problems such as weak eyesight, crossed eyes and lazy eye can be corrected by visual training, with a very high rate of success.
